Sunflower seed & carrot dog biscuits are a wholesome homemade treat for your family pet.

I was one of those kids who always wanted a dog. I wanted a pony too but as I got a little older asking for a dog seemed more achievable. Until a puppy finally arrived, when I was in grade six, I used to knock on neighbour’s doors and ask if I could walk their dogs.

In all of the years that we had dogs it never occurred to me to make them homemade treats. On occasion I’d buy our family dog giant cow femurs from a butcher at the Fredericton Farmer’s Market. (The butcher said they were better than an alarm for deterring burglars.)

It’s easy to make homemade dog biscuits

A former colleague discovered this recipe online and made the treats for her neighbour’s dogs. The recipe makes about a dozen generous treats but it can be doubled. The original recipe called for the biscuits to be baked just 10 minutes so they stay soft. I bake mine longer so they have some crunch.

This recipe makes good crackers for people too. Just add 1/2 tsp. salt instead of 1/4 tsp.
